What is School Governance?

School governors work together with the Headteacher and school leaders to help shape the future of the school. They support the school's vision and values, ask questions, offer ideas and help make important decisions that are in the best interests of our pupils.

Governors don't get involved in the day-to-day running of the school. Instead, they focus on the bigger picture, helping to make sure the school provides a high-quality education, uses its budget wisely and continues to be a safe, happy and successful place for children to learn.

Who can be a Governor?

Anyone who is passionate about supporting our school and helping children achieve their best can become a school governor. Governors come from all walks of life and bring a variety of skills, knowledge and experiences to the role. You don't need to have a background in education – enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to make a positive difference are what's most important.

How can I become a Governor?

We're always pleased to hear from people who would like to get involved in supporting our school. When governor vacancies become available, we advertise them to our school community.

We currently have two Parent Governor vacancies. If you're a parent or carer of a child at our school and would like to play a part in helping shape the future of the school, we'd love to hear from you. For more information about the role or the election process, please contact the school office.

How many meetings do I attend as a Governor?

Our Governing Board meets six times during the school year. These meetings are where governors discuss important school matters, review progress and help plan for the future.

Governors are also very welcome to come along to school events throughout the year, such as performances, celebrations and open events. Visiting the school is a great way to see what's happening, meet pupils and staff, and be part of our school community.

How long is a Governor's term?

Governors are appointed for a four-year term. If your circumstances change, you can step down before the end of your term.

At the end of the four years, you're welcome to apply again if you'd like to continue as a governor.

Hi I'm Sarah and I am the Chair of the Governing body at St Patricks. This school holds a special place for me as it has been the Primary school for generations of my family. I also attended as a child and until recently both my children were students here.

My role is to support Mrs Boyes to ensure that the pupils have the best experience and enjoy their time at St Patricks.

Mr David Fleming (Foundation Governor)

I’m now retired and have been a parishioner at St Patrick’s in Elland for the last 21 years. My jobs included working for the Inland Revenue (!), general manager at Halifax RLFC and as a team leader with the housing repairs team at the local authority. I was lucky enough to enjoy a full Catholic state education and am really keen that today’s young people have access to the same educational benefits - both pastoral and religious.

It’s time for me to try and assist this new generation to thrive and prosper, especially as they are all from the same area.

Miss Jeni Almond (Foundation Governor)

I have worked in education for over 20 years as a teacher and school leader and am currently a Regional Improvement Officer supporting schools across a Catholic multi-academy trust. Throughout my career, I have developed a particular interest in teaching and learning, curriculum development, assessment and school improvement.

I wanted to become a governor because I care about education and wanted to support a school in a different way. As most of my career has been in secondary education, I was also keen to learn more about the primary sector. I enjoy working with school leaders and fellow governors to help the school continue to thrive. St Patrick's is a special school because of its strong sense of community and the way its Catholic values are reflected in everyday school life. It is a privilege to play a small part in supporting the school and its pupils.

Outside of work, I enjoy lots of travelling, attending live music events and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy discovering new places, trying different restaurants and planning my next trip. At home, I have a cat called Poppy, who is a much-loved part of the family.

Mrs Karen Nutbrown (Staff Governor)

I am in my ninth year teaching at St. Patrick's and I genuinely care about our school, the children and the community, therefore, I wanted to play a more active role in helping it grow and succeed. As a teacher, I see everyday the difference that a supportive, positive school environment can make to children and I thought I could use my experience and understanding to help shape decisions that have a real impact on our children and staff.

I love being part of our school community and working with others and I feel that becoming a governor has given me the opportunity to listen to the school staff and share their thoughts and ideas. Most importantly, it allows me to contribute to making our school the best possible place for our children to learn, feel safe, be happy and reach their full potential.
