Music
Early Years and Key Stage 1
In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we follow the Kapow Scheme of Learning to teach music.
Kapow Mixed Age Music Progression
Key Stage 2
Music in Key Stage 2 is taught by a specialist music teacher and Choral Director from The Diocese of Leeds Singing Programme. Mr Mander teaches children singing each week, covering National Curriculum Objectives.
Children also perform for the rest of school and parents and carers in assemblies and other events.
Music Curriculum Example
Music Long Term Overview - Diocese of Leeds
We are proud to be part of the Diocese of Leeds School Singing Programme. Classes Kirkstall and Rievaulx receive weekly singing sessions delivered by an expert Choral Director from the Diocese, focusing on positive engagement with singing and supporting the Catholic life of the school through sacred music. The sessions offer practical and incremental coverage of areas of the music curriculum - including notation - in a two-year curriculum framework developed by the Diocese, the National Schools Singing Programme and the National Youth Choir of Scotland.
As a result of this, our pupils also have the opportunity to join one of the Diocese’s acclaimed after-school choirs, which offer an incredible opportunity to pursue a passion for singing and music. You can find online resources that support this work on the Schools Singing Programme’s YouTube channel (www.schoolssingingprogramme.org.uk). Our local Diocese choir is Huddersfield Youth Choir - please contact office@dioceseofleedsmusic.org.uk for more information about joining.
Weekly Singing Practice
All children in Years 1-6 attend a weekly singing practice. Mrs Woffenden visits school to support children to prepare for special events such as liturgy, mass and performances.
These sessions support our pupils to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and the significance of music in worship, referencing ‘Virtues to Live By’ where possible. They also build further confidence and enjoyment for singing and music more widely.
